Design Notes: A Performance Should Tell a Story

When we think about entertainment at a wedding, the first ideas are usually a live band, a DJ or maybe a saxophonist.

But entertainment can be so much more than that.

Sometimes, the most memorable moments happen when the performance feels completely connected to the space and the story we are creating.

For one particularly creative couple who loved contemporary art, we wanted the transition into the after-party to feel unexpected: almost like entering a different world. Rather than simply having someone waiting with welcome drinks, performers greeted guests wearing blazers inspired by Salvador Dalí’s iconic Aphrodisiac Jacket, serving shots as everyone arrived.

It was playful, a little surreal and completely suited to the couple. The performers didn’t really feel like performers at all; they simply became part of the setting.

This is something we always find interesting when designing a celebration: entertainment doesn’t have to be a separate moment or something guests stop to watch.

It can be part of the space, the atmosphere and the way the evening unfolds. And often, those small unexpected moments are the ones people end up talking about afterwards.
